After some controversy that led to Eddie Murphy canceling as this year’s host for the Oscars, and last year’s lackluster performance by a James Franco and Anne Hathaway combination, the Academy went for a safe bet this year. They turned to their “Old Faithful”, Billy Crystal, who had previously hosted eight other times. How was his return to the show received?
We looked at minute-by-minute Twitter mentions of “Billy Crystal” from the beginning to the end of the night as well as sentiment over his performance.
Despite having some reports of his jokes falling flat, it looks like the event went as planned and without any major hiccups. Billy Crystal received a consistently positive reaction on Twitter, with roughly 50% of total posts being markedly positive for him. Of all posts expressing either a positive or negative opinion, Crystal got more than two-thirds of positive posts. Even Justin Bieber thanked Crystal, and got a collective almost 8,000 re-thanks via retweets.
Looking at mentions and sentiment for the Oscars, we see a smooth event with mostly positive mentions throughout: it seems the Academy can thank Billy Crystal for last night’s success.
